Prerequisites:

This course is principally intended for candidates for certification as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch. Mariners should be proficient in calculations involving basic and advanced arithmetic including adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, including use of fractions and decimals. They should also be able to deal with arithmetical expressions involving brackets and various other computations. A scientific calculator is required. Students are expected to be able to read and speak English. Students must meet the citizenship requirements listed in 46 CFR 10.221.

This course is intended to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of basic ship stability and construction.

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Ship Construction and Basic Stability (CMTIVA-449) course will satisfy:
The stability and ship construction training requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(xii) for an STCW endorsement of Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) on vessels of 500 GT (ITC) or more (Operational Level); AND
The stability and ship construction standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.309(a)(3) and 11.319(a)(3); STCW Code Section A-II/1 and Table A-II/1, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from: NVIC 12.-14(Ch-7) Tasks 10.1, 11.3, 13.1, 13.2, 13.4; AND NVIC 02-18(Ch-5) Tasks 10.1.A, 11.3.A, 13.1.A, 13.2.A, 13.3.A, and 13.4.A; AND
The stability and ship construction standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.317(a)(2) and 11.321(a)(2); STCW Code Section A-II/3 and Table A-II/3, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 13-14(Ch-5) Tasks 8.1.A, 8.2.A, 8.3.A, 8.4.A.
Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.

Examination:

One written examination is designed to evaluate the student’s knowledge and comprehension of the material presented. The examination is 40 questions requires a minimum passing score of 70%.
