KeyMacro is a lightweight program that simplifies the creation and management of SSH keys. It features a clean and well-organized user interface with no adornments or settings that might annoy users.
Setup, prerequisites, and interface
Installing KeyMacro is straightforward, since it only needs the.NET Framework. Although there are no particular options or third-party components included with the setup file, the interface is highly customizable.
When you’re done, the program looks like this.
On the left side, you can find a list of the recent keys created and their respective descriptions. You can switch from this pane to other panes through the three buttons at the bottom.
On the right side, you can see the main window, which consists of two tabs, one for keys and another for log files. The keys tab holds a key menu as well as an option to add a new key.
When you add a key with the option “Add Key”, you will be prompted for the name and the fingerprint of the key. From the fingerprint, the generated password can be extracted. You can enter a password (there’s a warning box that tells you to do that) or a comment.
This window also shows the main settings, where you can set the list of key-recording programs, the number of lines to display in the logs, the default log file, the selected encoding to decode and save keys, and the account to log in.
You can also check if the selected program has the permission to add, create, and edit keys.
Each time you add a key, the profile name will be saved and displayed, along with its fingerprint.
View log details and modify settings
The main window consists of two panes, the first one containing the recent log files and the second one displaying the main log details.
The logs pane lists log files that were created and saved during your session. For each log file, the display holds the date and time of creation, the number of lines, the filename, the key profile name, and the key itself.
You can switch from the logs pane to other panes by clicking on the buttons at the bottom of the window.
When it comes to key details, you can select a log file and view its contents by going to the list of keys.
The log details are also displayed when you click on the help button. There, you can view instructions on how to manage your SSH keys.
