Lifecycle of a Mindset

One of the many reasons why people come to see me is because they find themselves stuck in a mindset that doesn’t serve them. I don’t think of it in terms of a mindset as much as a set of beliefs that have been formed. Most often it is beliefs of not being worthy, not being smart enough or people not believing in them. This can be a cycle where you believe you’re not good enough and start to believe that maybe you are.

I think this is not the worst of all things as this is something we all go through at some point. In many cases however I’ve found that people go through this mindset multiple times over their lifetime and when they come in for help, they just can’t seem to get out. If it was easy to change your mindset, there would be no need for any kind of psychology.

I’m also very wary of the “New Age” movement of positive thinking and the fact that you don’t have to be an asshole to be happy. I think this is all false. It is easy to be happier when you have good beliefs, however that is not always the case. You can be happy in a loving relationship, have a job you’re passionate about or experience other things. The problem comes in when you have bad thoughts and then have a belief that you can’t be happy with those bad thoughts. You have to get rid of those thoughts first.

There’s no better way than for you to find out whether you can be happy or not. Do that right now by sitting for about 10 minutes. Write down what you feel, how you feel, what you think and how you think. For example I’d say I’m pretty angry today but I think I’m supposed to be angry
