The Easy Histogram Equalization filter corrects for the fact that in many video sequences the histogram of the source video often does not fit the assumptions that are made when deriving the histogram equalization algorithm. For instance, in satellite images the darkest part of the image always has the lowest percentage of pixels. When a video is shot in a brightly lit room, the darkest areas often also happen to be the brightest ones in the video. This filter attempts to correct for this.

It is assumed that the source video is already linear. If this filter is used after a MPEG-2 movie, as is done in many video-to-video conversion systems, the MPEG-2 decoder will try to compensate for the apparent loss of brightness when converting from left to right, and vice versa. This is sometimes done with the MPEG-2 decoder itself, but usually it requires additional parameters to be set. If the input video is not linear, or if this filter is used on the output, the additional compensation may harm the resulting picture content. This is the same as assuming that the histogram of the source video is equal to the histogram of the output.

The Easy Histogram Equalization filter processes the video frames of an input video one at a time. The histograms of the input and output videos are compared and a color histogram equalization is performed on the input and output videos in a similar manner.

This histogram equalization reduces the difference between the distribution of bright and dark pixels. The histogram equalization typically increases the number of dark pixels in the light areas and the number of bright pixels in the dark areas.

The resulting image has a higher contrast. If this is not desired, the contrast of the resulting image may be reduced by modifying the contrast values in the image after applying this filter.

The term “equalization” means that the histogram of the entire image is corrected by distributing the pixel intensities uniformly across the intensity range.

The histograms can be inspected and modified by entering the Image/Levels filter of VirtualDub. Use the Options/Parameters to set any parameter you like. (The Advanced Options/Parameters Dialog can be used to adjust the parameters independently.)

The Easy Histogram Equalization (EHE) filter is a general purpose image histogram equalization filter. It is fast, simple, and does not require that a pixel histogram of the image be calculated beforehand. If a histogram of the image is unavailable, it can be calculated using the specified number of bins. It is suitable for correcting degraded or poorly captured source video from a video camera, although it is not ideally suited for correcting problems such as those that are due to non-linear digital video cameras and poor recording conditions. It is best used in a sequence of image frames to provide a smooth transition between the source image and the equalized image.
Some users of this filter have reported that the resultant image has a slight distortion of the image contents. This may be avoided by enabling the “Be sure to preserve image content” check box.
There is one additional setting. If an even distribution of pixel intensities is desired, as most digital cameras aim for when shooting stills, the “Apply equally distributed pixel intensities” check box can be checked to ensure a reasonably even distribution.
The EHE filter is an enhancement of the Virtual Histogram Equalization (VHE) filter. The EHE filter is, however, much faster and does not require the calculation of the histogram, while the VHE filter uses the full histogram of an image in order to provide very good results and is somewhat slower.
The EHE filter requires that the user selects a number of bins to use to equalize the intensity of the image. The sample frame display shows the distribution of pixel intensities in the image compared to the target distribution. The EHE filter provides six intensities to choose from for any image input size, as shown in the figure to the right. The effect of choosing a given number of bins is shown in the figure to the left, which shows the result of the filter using 32 bins, divided by the output of the filter using 7 bins.
