Course Details:

This course provides classroom and practical training to mariners who wish to obtain an endorsement as Lifeboatman Limited/PSC – limited to vessels not equipped with lifeboats.  The focus of the classroom portion of this course is to review all of the material already covered in the STCW – 95 Basic Safety Training courses with an emphasis on being the Person in Charge of a Survival Craft.

The course satisfies the following U.S. Coast Guard requirements:
  1. the training requirements of Section A-VI/2 and Table A-VI/2-1 of the STCW Code restricted to service on vessels that are not equipped with lifeboats provided that they have also satisfied the requirements of Table A-VI/1-1 for Personal Survival Techniques and Table A-VI/1-3 for Elementary First Aid; AND
  2. the Rescue Craft practical demonstration requirements for a Lifeboatman Limited endorsement; AND
  3. the written “Survival Craft” examination requirements of 46 CFR 12.05-9 for an endorsement as Lifeboatman Limited (exam modules 441xx or 761xx)

Ideally, students attending the course should have completed a minimum of one year underway on vessels over 65 feet in length.  Prerequisite completion of both the STCW – 95 Personal Survival and Elementary First Aid courses is required.  The course is also useful to mariners and others who wish to obtain training in basic survival craft operations.  In most cases, the students for each course will normally have backgrounds that meet or exceed the ideal entry standards stated above.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Principles of Survival at Sea
  • The SOLAS Convention
  • General Lifesaving
  • Emergency Situations
  • Vessel Evacuation and Abandon Ship Procedures
  • Search and Rescue
  • Lifesaving Rules and Regulations
  • First Aid Review
  •  Inflatable Life Rafts
  • Rescue Boats
  • Practical Launching, Operation and Recovery of a SOLAS Rescue Boat

Examination:

Examinations and assessments are designed to test a students knowledge and comprehension of the tasks, safety and deck general knowledge required of a Lifeboatman Limited/PSC.  The examination is similar in format and content to the examination given at the U.S. Coast Guard Regional Examination Centers (RECs) and is accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard in lieu of their examination.  The Survival Craft practical assessment meets the intent of the U.S. Coast Guard National Maritime Centers Policy Letter 08-01.

There is one written examination consisting of 50 questions that requires a minimum score of 70% and a practical assessment on-board the SOLAS rescue boat that is a pass/fail assessment.
