This course aims to provide the training for candidates to provide medical first aid on board ship, in accordance with Section A-VI/4 of the STCW Code. Any applicant who successfully completes this course will satisfy the Medical First Aid training requirements of Section A-VI/4 and Table A-VI/4-1 of the STCW Code and CFR 12.13-1.

This course will also be of value to others who need a more in-depth medical training who may or may not operate vessels on the water and who may not be seeking U.S. Coast Guard licenses, or whose experience is not up to the minimum requirements established under ideal conditions. Because of this, entry standards can be adjusted to suit the particular circumstances. In most cases, the students for each course will normally have backgrounds that meet or exceed the ideal entry standards stated above.

Course Details:

  • Body Structure and Function
  • Toxicological Hazards Aboard Ship
  • Examination of Patient
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Burns, scalds, and effects of heat and cold
  • Fractures, dislocations, and muscular injuries
  • Medical care of rescued persons, including distress, hypothermia, and cold exposure
  • External Assistance
  • Pharmacology
  • Sterilization
  • Cardiac arrest, drowning and asphyxia
  • Behavioral and psychiatric emergencies
     

Examination:

One examination is administered at the end of the course. There will be practical portions administered throughout the course that are pass/fail.
