Course Details:

This course is designed to provide fire fighting training for mariners seeking to meet USCG or IMO requirements for the Basic & Advanced Firefighting course. Any student who successfully completes the Combined Basic & Advanced Fire Fighting course will satisfy the Basic Safety Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting training requirements of Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code and 46 CFR 10.205(1)(2); and the Advanced Firefighting training requirements of Section A-VI/3 of the STCW Code; and Basic & Advanced Fire Fighting training requirements of 46 CFR 10.205(g) and 10.401(g)(l) for a license; Fire Fighting training requirements of 46 CFR 13.207, 13.307(a), 13.407 or 13.507 for any tankerman endorsement.

A trainee successfully completing this course will be able to react in a correct manner in the event of an outbreak of fire, to take appropriate measures for the safety of personnel and of the vessel, and to use the firefighting appliances correctly. The trainee will also have the knowledge to identify and correct hazards and thus, prevent fires from occurring.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of theory of fire
  • Demonstrate an understanding of need and methods for fire prevention
  • Demonstrate an understanding of shipboard fire and smoke detection systems
  • Demonstrate an understanding of shipboard fixed systems
  • Describe the use, operation, maintenance and inspection requirements of fire station and portable equipment
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of shipboard organization and an ability to organize and train fire parties
  • Identify and inspect PPE, including SCBA
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic actions employed from initial actions through post-fire
  • Understand the importance of contingency planning and demonstrate ability to prepare pre-fire plan
  • Demonstrate knowledge of precautions and hazards associated with material storage/handling and fire fighting involving dangerous goods
  • Demonstrate knowledge of fire fighting procedures, in port and at sea, with emphasis on organization, strategies, tactics, command and control
  • Demonstrate practical application of fire fighting principles including extinguishing fire and using protective equipment
  • Demonstrate skills in controlling fire operations in simulation exercises
     

Examination:

One written examination and five practical portions are administered during the course. The written examination requires a minimum passing score of 70% and the practical portions are pass/fail.
