This course provides classroom training in celestial
navigation techniques and is intended for individuals who
wish to obtain an “Upon Oceans” endorsement on their U.S.
Coast Guard License. The course is of value to others who
have a desire to learn celestial navigation techniques.
Any student who successfully completes the course
with a passing grade of 80% will satisfy the Celestial
Navigation training requirements for certification as
Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of
500 or more gross tonnage (ITC) and will be considered
to have successfully demonstrated the competence Plan
and Conduct a Passage and Determine Position: Ability to
Use Celestial Bodies to Determine the Ship’s Position of
Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code; AND will be considered to
have successfully demonstrated the equivalent of
assessments OICNW-1-1E and OICNW-1-1F from the National
Assessment Guidelines for Table A-II/1 of the STCW
Code. Students will also satisfy the celestial
navigation examination requirements of 46 CFR 10.215(c)
and 10.401(d) for any deck license up to Master Not More
Than 500/1600 Gross Register Tons Upon Oceans. The
course is acceptable for the following Coast Guard
examination modules: 216xx,206xx, 166xx, 078xx,
178xx, and 374xx.
