This course provides classroom training to
mariners seeking information and training in navigation and
piloting either as a preparation class to a US Coast Guard
approved training program, to take a US Coast Guard license
examination at a Regional Examination Center, to assist them in
a military career, or general knowledge in navigation of
vessels. The course is applicable to those operating on Inland
and/or Near Coastal waters. A basic knowledge and skill level
equal to the Navigation Basic course is expected. Students
should be familiar with the use of simple piloting tools such as
parallel rulers, triangles, dividers and compass.
The following topics are covered:
- Comprehensive review of basic navigation and piloting
- Gyro compass error and correction
- Tides and currents including use of Table 3
- Distance and bearing off
- Using luminous and geographic range tables
- Plotting LORAN “C” lines of position
- Plotting RADAR lines of position
- Taking RADAR ranges and bearings on TRANSAS RADAR
simulators
- Accuracy of GPS and DGPS
- Introduction to Electronic Charting and Display
Information Systems (ECDIS)
- Practical exercises “A day’s work in Navigation: Inland
and Near Coastal Waters”
